Some Icing In Central Virginia

Most of the overnight freezing rain and rain has ended in central Virginia, with merely a fine mist or drizzle continuing to fall in the area. However, this drizzle is falling on surfaces that in the northwest half of the state, including slicing right through the Richmond Metro area, are just at or below the freezing mark. This fine mist is creating a glaze of ice on elevated surfaces, like tree branches, bridges, steps and some sidewalks. Many schools in the area are delaying their starts today because of this glaze of ice, mainly from north and west Richmond areas on into northern and western parts of the state. Some of the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. while the drizzle continues, with the Freezing Rain Advisory in pink until 7 a.m.

Winter Weather Advisory Expanded

The winter weather advisory has been extended farther south and west. The metro Richmond area will see temps dropping into the range of 34-37 degrees, and will likely not be added to the advisory area.

Winter Weather Advisory Issued

A winter weather advisory has been issued for northwest and north-central VA, which will be in effect from 8 PM tonight until 9 AM tomorrow. The primary precipitation type will be freezing rain (glaze of ice), as rain falls into very shallow sub-freezing temperatures. This advisory could be extended farther south and west later this evening.
