Looking For A Pattern Shift

The past thirty days have been generally cooler than normal for most of the United States.


In fact, looking at the past seven days, it has been exceptionally cold for parts of the Midwest and Deep South.


Looking at the latest long range forecast data, it looks like this pattern will break down, especially around January 20 to 23.

Snow Showers & Gusty Winds Linger In Peninsulas

Snow showers combined with gusty winds are kicking up snow in parts of the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula mid-day Friday. Moderate snowfall is tracking southeast at 20 mph at this time, and will affect areas along and north of I-64 for another hour or so. Additional accumulations should be less than 0.5" from these new showers, but with the gusty winds, snow on the ground will be blown about and can reduce visibilities a bit.

Elsewhere, skies are clear in Central Virginia with much colder air surging into the Mid-Atlantic. Northwest winds will stay in the 15-20 mph range all afternoon, with higher gusts.

Wind Chills are currently in the upper teens and low-20's in the region.

Only a light snowfall fell in Central Virginia overnight, just enough to dust grassy and elevated surfaces, and make the roads wet enough to produce a thin glaze of ice once temperatures dropped below freezing Friday around sunrise. Here are some of the snow reports coming in this morning:
