Update On The James River

Rivers and stream are running very high this morning after yesterday's rain. Notice all the black and blue dots on the map below - they indicate rivers and stream levels which are much above normal. You can find an interactive version of this map at the following link:

The James River is expected to crest at 14.8 feet in Westham tomorrow morning. This is high enough to produce some minor flooding in low lying areas near the river. The James should drop below flood stage by early Sunday afternoon. Use extra caution if you plan to be anywhere near the river this weekend!

Severe Thunderstorm Watch in Effect Until 8 PM

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 8 PM for much of Virginia, including the Richmond metro area (see graphic). Wind gusts to 70 mph, hail to one inch in diameter, and brief tornadoes will be possible.

Severe Weather Threat Increasing - Watch Likely

The threat for severe weather across much of central, southern, and eastern VA is increasing, and it appears as though a severe thunderstorm watch will be issued shortly. The graphic indicates the area being monitored by the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK where the greatest potential for damaging wind gusts and brief tornadoes will be possible.
