Risk for Severe Storms Thursday

As a cold front approaches the Commonwealth today from the northwest with heat and humidity remaining firmly in place in the Mid-Atlantic, strong to severe thunderstorms may develop this afternoon and evening. The risks from these storms include damaging winds and hail, as well as frequent lightning and heavy downpours. I expect storms to form first in western Virginia around I-81 at Noon, then track to the east-southeast and intensify. The storms may converge into a squall line with damaging winds and torrential downpours by late afternoon.
